One thing you could do is at least describe what the tracks were in question, and maybe include links to Amazon or Spotify (if the tracks are available there). That way people could cobble together the list for themselves. I’m considering something similar for the book I’m working on now — a playlist page that will be filed with the book itself on my website.

I had my own ideas for how something like this could play out, but it would involve artists of the PAST covering Rush. E.g., “Astral Weeks”-era Van Morrison doing, say, “Closer to the Heart” — which wouldn’t have been wholly impossible once upon a time…

“Hold Your Fire” was one of the first CDs I ever bought — through, if memory serves, the BMG Music Club (back before I learned what a total ripoff that was). I actually liked it quite a bit out of the box, although a few other folks who also loved Rush were as disdainful as you were about it, to wit: “That’s not a Rush album; now, ‘Moving Pictures’ — THAT’s a Rush album,” etc. Reminded me, more than anything else, of the snarling derision (mostly unjustified) that a lot of Who fans had for, say, “The Who By Numbers”.

Presto is a wonderful album. I’ve long considered it one of the overlooked jewels of the Rush collection.

The writer might have a point. There is enough catastrohy in life as it is. But I still believe that the Destiny books were some of the best ST book i’ve read.

Depressing, perhaps. Despairing, probably. Fatalistic, definitely. But I believe Destiny was needed. ST had stalled and it needed a jump start, if you will. Destiny did the job perfectly. And the fact that Destiny’s “clean slate” got me into writing on a serious level just adds to the positives.

So all in all, Mr Mack. You might be a genocidal writer (was the number again, 60 billion?), but we still love you for it. :-)

Kind of you to say, Bill. Thanks! But I’m not at all upset by the fan’s letter. If anything, I respect the passion that impels someone to put sentiments such as those to paper the old-fashioned way and actually spend a stamp to send it to me. There’s integrity in it.
