Hey David,
Just so you know, I’m French so we do have a health care and I’m sorry to report that to get an appointment with a doctor (especially a specialist) is very hard around here too.
The main reason is that there is a fix number of people authorized to practice. That system is once again made to avoid deepening the hole that our health care is digging. Not enough doctor = less people visiting. I don’t really know if it’s working, but it’s making people angry for sure…
For example depending on where you live in France you’ll have to drive a couple of hours and wait about 4 months to get your eyesight checked ! (I made an appointment last month i’ll go to it at the end of this month so about 6 weeks later. And i live in PARIS !!!)
Though, if it’s really an emergency, you’ll get someone rather quickly… (depending on the level of emergency of course)

Wow, seems you had a close call, and a life changing experience.
Is it why you seem to have a stong relation with the notion of “Destiny” ?
To me Family and friends are good pillars that you need when facing things like that.
I had surgery too about 10 years ago too. (some kind of ass kyst) Of course it was not as important as yours but i was afraid of not waking up after the anaestetic. You see my father killed himself when he was about 27 and i was 27 at the time. He did it because he had bone cancer and would have had to suffer a great deal and chose the easy way out.
In a way when i found myslef facing a minor surgery at 27 (the first and only one i ever had) the rationality i usually use couldn’t overcome the thought that i too was down the hill because i “magically” could not outlive my father. (how stupid of an idea?)
Is that weird ? Yes it is, but when you are living it, it’s something that you can not help thinking.
Another fun stuff, when i woke up from the surgery, i saw a halo of white and a blurry someone looking at me and i asked “are you an angel?” to the nurse that was watching my wake up…(being a non believer i guess you could say that’s strange)
I wonder if they have this often ? (^_^)
In the end the surgery was a sucess (i told you it was easy surgery) well as much as it could be… Because since then, though, i can not sit for long hours without my ass hurting like hell !lol!

Hi there,
I’m sorry to hear that your ST book as been put “on hold”…

As for UPS it seems quite a bother… In France we can have our package delivered in stores that open late at night. (called rellais “point”) It’s very usefull. But still we have UPS for some things and the service is quite the same as in America !lol!

By the way I checked the site (scifichick) but was kind of surprised to find not one but two ad banner for “DIANETICS.ORG” …
Granted as a fan of scifi the L. Ron Hubbard religion is kind of a funny entertainment…
But i was kind of surprise to find them there…

I understand that other people might enjoy 3D effects more than I do, and that's fine. The 3D elements of Avatar were very well made. As for the comparison of the classic SF trope of "caught between a big critter and a bigger critter," the sequence in Avatar was far better executed than the one in Star Trek — partly because it had a more complex environment in which to stage a chase and because the circumstances of the main character's escape made more sense.

Hey David,
Good review. (i saw the movie before reading it)
I totally agree with you on the “paint-by-numbers”…
The last part of the movie is just bad… i don’t want to spoil too much but i’ll just say that action without brain planning before is just bad…
That being said it’s a hell of a beautiful movie to look at !
I don’t share your views on the 3 though. I think it get you into the scenes and after a while you don’t look at the special effects but instead You just feel more connected to the scenes… so i irecommend that people watch it in 3D. (but i understant that, because it is new, people can get distracted from the story. On the other hand the story is really not that complex isn’t it?)

If you look at the scene, the one that “must be in scifi movies” where the big animal charge the hero and is being chased by another biger animal,
Don’t you think it was really well made in comparison to the one in another big scifi hit of the year ? (the one on an ice planet)
